Broadway Malyan wins award for Best Shopping Centre

Broadway Malyan’s scheme Forum Coimbra has won Best Shopping Centre at the MAPIC Awards 2007 beating 20 other projects around the world. Forum Coimbra is a suburban shopping centre located on the site of a former textile factory. It sits on a hill on the left bank of the Mondego River and forms the first completed building of a masterplan, which will provide the expansion area of the city. It commands magnificent hill top views over the city of Coimbra, especially from the food court and terraces. It is a 3-level enclosed scheme with 5 levels of underground and surface car parking. Problems of building on a steeply sloping site were used to advantage by building the scheme into the hillside and also by allowing direct access from the different levels of car parks into almost all the areas of the scheme. The development is designed around three spacious plazas set in a triangle and connected by malls. Each of the plazas has a different geometry – circular, square and rectangular – and rises to the skylights set in the roof, flooding all the floors and even some areas of the underground car park with natural light. Its climate control system is designed to re-use superfluous heat through heat recovery. Three natural elements set the theme for the design of the plazas: the Water Plaza has cool blue tones and decorative elements reminiscent of ice (suspended transparent cubes), the Earth Plaza uses wood and earthy tones while the Fire Plaza is decorated in the reds and oranges of flames. The 48,000m² centre encompasses a wide retail selection and a strong presence of leisure facilities: 146 shops over 3 floors plus a hypermarket, 6 screen multiplex cinema, leisure complex, food court with 28 restaurants and car parking for 2,500 cars. Forum Coimbra Shopping Centre won this new category for its outstanding architectural and environmental qualities and the originality of its concept. The scheme was also awarded “Best Large Shopping Centre” at the 2007 ICSC Awards
