New park serves office towers

Situated at the heart of future CBD of Suzhou Industrial Park, a newly developed new town minutes away from the historic city, Millennium Park serves as a focal terminus for the major boulevard and an urban oasis for the nearby office towers in the future. The concept of the park aims in fostering dialogue with the old Suzhou gardens but simultaneously provide a strong spatial framework that resonates a sense of modernity. Responding to the prominent location of the site, the design derives from the interplay between a concentric focal plaza at the top of a grass mound to respond to the boulevard and horizontal bands of formal tree planting to create pocket spaces for seating. Two paths circumscribe the base of the feature mound; one with a linear curved reflective pool that provides a sense of tranquility within the openness while the other is articulated with more rustic paving and informal tree massing to create a sense of enclosure as the trees mature. The paths intend to accentuate the dialectic relationship between the more manmade and the natural. Within the framework, intricate textures of seasonal planting beds and gingko trees are used to display the seasonal interests. Together with the LED clock, these elements reemphasize the importance of layer of time within the project.
