Courtyard Beach House
This project attempts to capture the spirit of the holiday beach house in a typical Australian coastal town where suburban sprawl is homogenizing the built environment. The understated timber facade of the house will weather to a silvery grey and has been designed to be enveloped by climbing plants. The house will evolve as it gives back to it's natural setting. This modest house has a strong sense of arrival via a 'gangplank' where you ceremoniously retreat from workaday life. Outdoor space is an important part of beach house culture so we designed two protected courtyards first and then built the house around them. The house is divided into two wings separating sleeping and living. The restrained palette has a simplicity that gives the house an elemental quality.
