Make Architects are selected to design a new HQ for EDC in Germany
Make Architects have been selected as winners of an international competition to design a new headquarters building for EDC, a division of the globally-renowned clothing and accessories brand Esprit.
The competition brief challenged design teams to develop a concept for a flagship building on an 8,000m2 site within a commercial zone in the city of Ratingen, near Düsseldorf.
In response, Make’s proposals make the most efficient use possible of the site to create over 32,000m2 of accommodation.
Accordingly, the various functions of the building are distributed across 5 floors which twists upwards through the heart of the building.
Car parking, a gym and some showroom spaces are housed in the basement levels, while all creative divisions and office spaces are above ground, along with cafes, restaurants and lounge areas. Office areas are located at the external perimeter of the plan, ensuring that they benefit from maximum levels of daylight, with cores, clothing display areas, break out spaces and presentation suites occupying those areas where artificial lighting is required.
The interior features robust materials such as plain and coloured concrete, weathered steel and timber, all of which will develop their own natural patina and provide a simple but richly textured backdrop for the creative interaction which is the main focus of the building. Unitised aluminium-framed double-glazed units clad the prismatic facades, with glass panels tuned from transparent to tinted to provide views outwards and prevent solar gain as required. There is the potential for the facade to be further animated by the introduction of a graphic silkscreened onto the glazed panels.
