Hamiltons Architects redevelop the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama
The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama is about to embark upon a multi-million pound development consisting of performance, rehearsal and teaching facilities.
Hamiltons Architects have been appointed, as architects, for the project, along with their consultant team comprising Arup Acoustics, Equation Lighting, Mott Macdonald and Theatre Projects.
The plans for the College include a world class, acoustically excellent 350 seat concert hall, two theatres, one of which is a flexible black box performance space, as well as rehearsal rooms, theatre design studios and teaching facilities.
The project is due for client handover in autumn 2010.
Associate Director and Lead Architect (on the project) Jason Flanagan said, “We were thrilled to be chosen from a really strong list of competitors.
“Our design intentions focus on the process we will follow as we take the project forward. This involves designing the halls from the inside out to deliver acoustic and theatrical excellence.
“We are already developing a series of studies with the College of potential layouts for the building, which will be informed by the remarkable setting at the edge of Bute Park beside Cardiff Castle.
“We believe that this is an excellent opportunity to deliver truly world class venues, in the heart of an established arts destination.”
Hamiltons were chosen, from 34 applicants and a short-list of 11 candidates, because of their team’s wealth of experience in the arts and education sector.
