Hopkins get go ahead on phase 2 of Cloisters redevelopment at Norwich Cathedral

Following on from their award-winning provision of The Refectory visitor facilities for Norwich Cathedral in 2004, Hopkins Architects have now received Planning Consent for a second phase of works - a new Hostry Building. A £2.3m Heritage Lottery Fund grant, together with the Cathedral's own fundraising campaign, has provided the necessary funds to create a new Hostry building that will comprise education, exhibition and support spaces, a meeting room and Song School. Working within one of the most beautiful of all English Cathedral closes, their aim is to re-create the volume of the medieval Hostry that stood on this site, while making as little impact as possible on the fabric of the existing buildings and archaeological remains. They will improve access to the building and provide an entrance befitting the threshold of a spiritual place. Throughout the scheme they will be using materials found in the Cathedral, such as oak and limestone, to maintain the aesthetic of the original buildings, whilst bringing a spirit of modernity to the structure. Their work is as environmentally sustainable as possible, with natural ventilation, insulation and underfloor heating to improve energy efficiency wherever possible. The ground floor will encompass the entrance and visitor welcome, an ‘Encounter Space’, to host the Cathedral’s programme of temporary exhibitions and an education suite. The first floor will house a Community Room with seating for over 200 people, Song School and Music Library, with the potential for use as a recital space. Work is scheduled for completion for Christmas 2008.
