The property, perched on a hill in the temperate rain forest of coastal British Columbia, has a narrow frontage with a steep topography comprised of native cedar and douglas fir trees. Its location offers an unusual north-westerly view of the North shore mountains. Street access is located at the base of the sloped lot neccesitating a garage and autocourt at the ground floor level. The owners desired a house with an open plan at the living level facilitating a variety of interactions inside and outside above ground and at grade. As a result, the ground and main floors are embedded in the site allowing for both a viewing deck and a spa terrace with landscape at grade at the upper floor. Because living is assigned to the uppermost level, the house inverts the traditional arrangement of sleeping and bathing on the upper floors and living on lower floors. The landscaped roof garden over the garage connects to vegetation down the slope and offers an unobstructed view of the distant city and ocean. A butterfly roof opens up at the front and back of the lot to capture views of the mountains as well as a forest at the rear of the property. Glazing is located under the roof to accentuate structural expression of the steel post and Glu-lam beam system and to connect the house to the sky and forest beyond.
