The Unicorn Theatre for Children in Southwark, by Keith Williams Architects, was officially opened on 1st December by Lord Attenborough. The £13 million project is by far the UK’s most ambitious theatre project for children’s drama. Conceived as a “grown up” building for children, the large glazed foyer contains the studio theatre, and the “Grand Stair”, leading to the special copper clad main 340 seat auditorium, the building’s creative heart, which balances spectacularly 7metres above the foyer. These are large architectural gestures, yet the design of the balconies, seating and the main auditorium, its form derived from narrative story telling, all bring an appropriate smaller scale to a unique new theatrical complex.
