Make Architects has recently completed the interior architecture for Opera Residences – a new residential scheme currently under construction on one of the most coveted sites in the world, overlooking the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Opera House and Royal Botanic Garden.

Make won the international design competition to provide the interior architecture for the 104 premium apartments and penthouses, plus private amenities and a marketing suite.

The brief was to create the best residential interiors in Australia, which would sit comfortably in the international luxury market. A bespoke and considered approach ensure the design is worthy of the incredible views they command, providing a level of rich materiality and attention to detail akin to the most luxurious hotel.

On approach, the double height reception space is sculpted with travertine walls that softly lead guests from one space to the next. The external bronze cladding travels from outside to in, seamlessly folding into a fireplace in the residents lounge whilst wrapping the library to create two intimate amenity areas.

Each apartment is choreographed to channels sightlines, showcasing internal and external views at every opportunity, with full height glazing used to maximise light and sense of space and proportion. Make has emphasised the grandeur of these apartments using the finest materials such as sculpted corian, rich Italian travertine, calacatta marble and bespoke flemish copper detailing, creating tactile layers of luxury.

Chevron timber flooring or Italian travertine form the base palette for the apartments. Whilst grand entertainer kitchens can be selected from a materials palette of an exceptionally high standard, with island benches crafted out of corian or calacatta marble, offset by bespoke–designed flemish copper inlays.

Likewise, the master bedrooms incorporate en-suite bathrooms and walk-in wardrobes to emulate a high-end hotel, whilst timber joinery connects the spaces, allowing a fluid transition from one space to the next. The bathroom includes bespoke calacatta marble credenzas, incorporating soft crafted curves that provide generous storage as well as beautiful oversized mirrors framed by flemish copper, adding subtle opulence.

The design contines through to the penthouses, with an upgrade of bespoke parquetry, large format bookmatched calacatta to bathroom walls and floors, potoro marble bathroom credenza’s and kitchen islands as well as sumptuous fluted glass sliding doors and oversized triptic mirrors, all exuding generosity.

Make has worked closely with Tzannes architects to integrate the interior solution into the overall architectural concept, allowing one to enhance the other with a unified vision. Designing bespoke kitchens, trims, handles, vanities and furniture – rather than relying on off-the-shelf solutions –allowed them to work collaboratively with craftspeople, providing a truly unique offering to the residents.
