A hotel in Hong Kong that Conran and Partners  played a key role in designing has scooped a hospitality industry ‘Oscar' for the best new hotel in the world.

Hotel ICON has been voted Best New Luxury Hotel in the 2012 World Luxury Hotel Awards just 18 months after opening as the world's first ‘teaching hotel'.

Conran and Partners was responsible for the food and beverage offering at Hotel ICON designing ‘Above & Beyond', a sophisticated private members' facility, and The Market, a stylish open-plan buffet restaurant offering a tempting selection of pan-Asian and Western favourites.

CL3 ARCHITECTS LTD were responsible for all the other interior areas, including the Main Lobby, a photograph of which is included in your post, plus rooms, ballroom, lobby bar, spa, gym, pool deck, teaching spaces plus training restaurant and vinotech lab.

Rocco Design Associates were the architects for the building.

Tina Norden, director of Conran and Partners, said the award was a tribute to the whole team involved in creating Hotel ICON. She said: "Our intent was to capture the vibrancy of the traditional Asian food market in their rawness, busyness and showcase their abundance of food but represent this in a contemporary context.

"The materials are natural and tough and we have left the ceiling services and structure exposed through a metal slatted screen.

"In contrast there is a close attention to detail, the counters are clad in marble, carefully detailed screens separate the dining rooms and the banquettes are upholstered in leather.

"The result is ‘tough luxe', inspired by the Asian food markets and resulting in a vibrant contemporary dining experience."

Richard Hatter, the general manager of Hotel ICON, said: "Up against stiff competition, we were one of the two Hong Kong hotels that made it in the Global Winners category.

"It is an incredible motivation for all of us to receive this acknowledgment from our industry and in particular since voting based on facilities and service excellence and is cast by hotel guests. We are very proud of our team and students.

"I am very pleased to see the recognition for this the world's first fully integrated teaching and research hotel developing true professionals in our industry."

Hotel ICON is just one of the 84 hotel and restaurant designs from the celebrated Shad Thames studio.

From Tokyo to Vienna, Calcutta to Cuba and some of London's finest and most popular restaurants and hotels, Conran and Partners sets the highest design standards in the global hospitality industry.

In London, a partnership with D&D has seen the successful opening this autumn of South Place Hotel, a City venue with a boho touch.

And the same partnership has seen the triumphant conversion of some of London's oldest and most historic commercial buildings, dating back to the 1760s, creating the Old Bengal Warehouse - a stylish terrace of wine shop, restaurant and bar.

Back in Asia, Conran and Partners' extensive design work also includes The Mandarin Grill at the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, one of the most venerable and prestigious restaurants in Hong Kong. ‘Zen', an Asian-fusion restaurant, formed part of Conran and Partners' complete renovation of the Park Hotel Kolkata. Initially inspired by the overlapping petals of a lotus flower, the concept for ‘Zen' was informed by the idea of layering and screens. The restaurant comprises a sequence of spaces which overlap and reveal one another through lighting, materials and sequential vistas.
