New building of the Bocconi University in Milan
The architect Dante Bonuccelli has designed four ad-hoc luminaires which FontanaArte has developed, engineered and manufactured. The studio Metis Lighting has designed the lighting project of the common parts and of the Aula Magna. The absence of suspended ceilings in many areas, the vertical surfaces made of glass and concrete and the simplicity of the rooms have led to the need to light the space with luminaries best integrated with the architectural structure offering excellent performance in terms of energy consumption, lighting level and visual comfort.
Linea 2: the lighting of gangways and stairways. Their lighting occurs by means of luminaires that are integrated in the walls, made of an internal aluminum element and an L-shaped screen. The latter - a polycarbonate extruded fire-proof profile with satin finish featuring transparent line in the intersection between vertical and horizontal plane - ensures a double lighting: wall-washing effect on the satin crystal wall and on the vertical side on the corridor space. The illuminating body is equipped with T5 fluorescent tubes and has an emergency kit. The effect is not only to separate the planes removing the image of the tank but also to perceive a very strong light line framed between two luminous planes.

Painted in red for this specific project, it can have different shapes and heights. Its structure is made of extruded aluminum with the typical H-section of an I-beam; the core has a cavity hosting the power cable running from the base along the vertical upright up to the terminals. Each branch carries 3 illuminating bodies, with spots and flood light, inserted in a box-like structure of stainless steel in polyester powder coating. A similar structure, housed in the upper part and hidden in the branch, hosts the three ballasts.
Linea 1: the lighting of offices. Approximately 800 offices have a frontal wall with fully glassed surface and mobile side walls specifically designed in double satin-etched glass. The problem of leading electric cables to the ceiling made of reinforced fair-faced concrete has been solved by means of vertical and horizontal paths inside the mobile wall where the luminaire has been mechanically fixed. The lighting unit is a single extruded aluminum component in different lengths. The illuminating body uses T5 fluorescent tubes, has a dark light optic and is supplied by electronic ballast with DALI dimming system.
Linea 8: the lighting of foyer. The most suggestive area of the building is the Aula Magna with its 950 seats: with access from the large foyer. The foyer - conceived as a multifunctional area - is lit by recessed lamps running along the suspended ceiling creating light lines along the whole length of the room. The lamps, equipped with extra clear glass diffusers with satin finish, come with a double light emission: diffused and adjustable in intensity by means of T5 fluorescent tubes as well as focused and punctual with higher intensity thanks to the halogen dichroic light sources.
Linea 4: the lighting of meeting rooms. The lighting is achieved by means of a suspended luminaire with diffused light - both uplight and downlight. The suspension cables are adjustable thanks to special devices that ensure the perfect alignment of the luminaires installed in a row. The lighting body is equipped with three T5 fluorescent tubes and has an emergency kit.
The installation chosen for the Aula Magna, that represents the anchor of the whole building, is Raso IP20 of Raso lighting system designed by Metis Lighting for FontanaArte in 2003. The uniqueness of the walls is best highlighted by this luminous system thanks to the special design of its optic elements ensuring the best luminous performance without any glare effect.
