Architectural studio GROUP A and multi-disciplinary design agency Fabrique have won the European tender for the complete renovation of the stations of Oostlijn (the 53 line from Central Station to Gaasperplas and the 54 line from Central Station to Gein) on the Amsterdam Metro.

Partially below ground and partially elevated, the metro-line has been left largely unchanged since its original design by Spängberg and Van Rhijn in the 1970s. This modern refurbishment by GROUP A and Fabrique will focus on rejuvenating the underground platforms, hallways and entrances of sixteen stations to create a comfortable, colourful system that is easily navigable by the travelling public.

Carefully positioned light accents and voids aim to enhance traveller orientation, whilst retaining the original character of the metro. This renovation is part of a larger plan by the DIVV to renovate the entire Amsterdam Metro system, improving all emergency exits and bringing the infrastructure up to date with all new rules and regulations by 2014.
