Hände hoch - hands up - is a collection for the home that includes a candlestick, a table mirror and a tray, and continues with a series of table and wall lamps. These hands juggle with a tray or hold up a mirror, and the candlestick can define various messages depending on the number of candles used. The collection draws on the aesthetics of the vanished world of circus clowns and magicians from František Tichý's paintings.
Jakub Berdych Karpelis
Jakub Berdych Karpelis (*1971, Prague) is the co-founder of Qubus, one of the most popular Czech design studios. Since the inception of Qubus in 2002 he has focused on conceptual work with traditional Czech materials such as glass and porcelain. Thanks to him the Qubus brand has spread beyond the Czech Republic, featuring the series, collections and products that are now so significant in Jakub's work. One of the best-known Qubus projects was the conversion of the interior of St Bartholomew's Church in Chodovice. You can find examples of Jakub's work in galleries in the Czech Republic and abroad, including Moss in New York and Mint in London, as well as in several museum collections such as the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague and Die Neue Sammlung - Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, and in private collections too. In addition to conceptual and product design, Jakub works on projects for interior design, architecture and fine art. Since 2008 he has been the Artistic Director of Dox by Qubus, a shop located in DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague that offers well-known names and international brands alongside a selection of contemporary Czech design and applied art.
