The Apex Tables by Hunting & Narud were launched at Scin Gallery during Clerkenwell Design Week this year, in collaboration with American Hardwood Export Council. This marked the festival's fifth anniversary and celebrated five types of American hardwood: tulipwood, American ash, hard maple, red oak and cherry.
This series of side tables were created using glass and wood, with the glass used as a container for the wood and also adding colour. A reverse from the norm, the hand-blown glass vessels encase and support turned wooden cones, becoming the support instead of being the more delicate material.
With minimal contact between the two materials, the apex of the cone which is a small 5mm point, is the only part of the wood in direct contact with the glass (hence the name). This creates a sharp visual contrast whilst encapsulating and highlighting the beauty of the wooden cones.
