Interpreting Nature’s Design
In January 2013, Interface introduced Urban Retreat in the UK, a collection which draws directly on the idea that we all have an instinctive love of nature – a science known as Biophilia.
In the compact living spaces of modern cities, people are increasingly searching for a link to the natural world. For many years, artists, scientists and designers have been exploring our need to maintain a connection with nature and have observed a direct link between this, well-being and productivity: the concept behind Urban Retreat was inspired by this growing trend.
Inspired by Nature
Emulating the intrinsic characteristics of natural habitats, such as traditional stone, dense woodland, and savannah grasses, Urban Retreat allows people to reconnect with nature, combining commercial interior design with mankind’s unreserved love for the natural environment.
Urban Retreat comes in three distinct styles, each available in a range of colours, providing a wealth of design opportunities:
Urban Retreat One
Available in three patterns, Urban Retreat One combines sharp and blurred patterns. It comes in eight colourways in a complex primary pattern and eight boldly mixed colours in a transitional pattern. They share four accent tiles that link and separate each pattern to allow designers to really get creative.
Urban Retreat Two
Urban Retreat Two includes three distinctive patterns. The tiles have a simple grid and understated cord pattern, mixed with an eccentric texture like the bark of an ancient tree.
Urban Retreat Three
The patterns in Urban Retreat Three share the same eight hues found in Urban Retreat Two; both pair elegantly with Urban Retreat One.
The tiles can also be mixed and matched and installed using a variety of methods and patterns to create an interior as unique as nature itself. The collection’s distinctive woven look was created with Interface’s innovative computer driven Tapestry machine, the first of its kind in Europe.
The evolution of modular flooring
Interface is continually looking for ways to innovate its products, and as such, has just launched Planks: narrow rectangular carpet tiles. Urban Retreat 501 is the first collection to be launched in the Planks range, extending the potential options for different combinations of formats, textures, colours and patterns.
Designed for longevity
Urban Retreat includes a variety of hardwearing carpet tiles, able to withstand heavy traffic for lasting performance; providing a high level of durability, additional under-foot comfort and sound-absorbing acoustic properties.
Interface is a global leader in the design and production of carpet tiles. Its products combine beauty and innovation with functionality and environmental credentials to help customers bring their design vision to life.
Interface was one of the first companies to publicly commit to sustainability, when it made a pledge in the mid-nineties to eliminate its impact on the environment by 2020.
Known as Mission Zero, it influences every aspect of the business and inspires the company to continually push the boundaries in order to achieve its goal.
Interface is now more than half way to reaching Mission Zero and has been widely recognised for its achievements to date. Its products have also achieved several awards, specifically for design and innovation, the most recent being The Athenaeum Good Design Award for World Textiles.
