GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE FORCE HEADQUARTERS, MANCHESTER
Friday 13 Jan 2012
Greater Manchester Police Force Headquarters is an iconic, BREEAM Excellent state-of-the-art facility that provides a first class working environment for Greater Manchester Police Force.
The bespoke interior design reflects the strong civic identity of Greater Manchester Police Force and responds to the complexities of multiple and diverse departmental relationships each with their own intricate interdependencies.
The new facility aspires to promote and encourage new ways of working to support advancements in operational policing and provide an environment conducive to improving efficiencies within the function of a highly demanding public service, promoting and supporting the team in their provision of the best level of public service.
At the heart of the design process the aim was to ensure that the arrival at the building, movement through the building and the quality of the finishes were dramatic, exciting, inspiring and welcoming. Aedas Architects achieved this by developing a rich and vibrant colour palette, incorporating the client's brand colours, and an "icon" theme unique to Greater Manchester Police. Six iconic people [Robert Peel, Winston Churchill, Marie Curie, Martin Luther King, Albert Einstein and Emmeline Pankhurst] represent the different floors symbolising the values, beliefs and achievements admired by the police and community and also serve to facilitate wayfinding. Typographic artwork was created by making the icon faces from keywords representing the ethos of Greater Manchester Police Force. Quotes from well-known politicians, sportsmen, businessmen, authors and musicians are also used throughout the building to give colour and inspiration.
"The new building is allowing us to change the way we work. The open plan layout will encourage us to work together better as teams and give greater visibility to team leaders. The flexibility of the space (combining a mix of desks, soft seating, focus rooms and meeting rooms on each floor) means that staff can chose the most appropriate place for them to work depending on what they need at the time."
