AECOM inspire staff with new workplace
AECOM is a global provider of professional technical and management support services to a broad range of markets across the facilities, transportation, environmental and energy industries. In Australia, the organisation has brought together a number of leading companies, including Maunsell, Bassett, EDAW, and ENSR to create a multi-disciplinary practice.
The new Brisbane workplace represented an opportunity for AECOM’s various business lines, previously located in nine offices across Brisbane, to co-locate and reinforce a single AECOM brand. Essentially, AECOM embarked on a cultural change, of which the new workplace was a major component. The new workplace hosts 850 staff in 13,500m2 of space over five floors of the new Leighton Properties HQ development in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, also designed by BVN Architecture. From the outset of the project, a series of stakeholder consultations, workshops and briefing meetings were carried out to ascertain the aspirations and requirements for the new space. These established a series of project goals, principles and concepts which ultimately served as a design guide for the project, helping to steer the decision-making process. Principles such as promoting the company’s core values, fostering a client-focused culture, innovation, agility, diversity, collaboration and harnessing sustainable opportunities were key drivers for the design blueprint.
In practice, the design cut large voids into the existing building to create a unifying space over the five levels of the tenancy. Through the void an interconnecting stair links all levels to create a dynamic common space and provide a sense of “One AECOM’. Clustered around the primary circulation zones are formal and informal meeting spaces, consolidated support facilities, social gathering and creative spaces and predominately open-plan work environments. The arrangement and execution of these spaces is designed to be flexible and multi-functional in order to support the different work styles and changing needs of the business.
