Coventry University Hub is a 24-hour ‘one-stop shop' where students can access social learning and support facilities as well as retail facilities and a large student Union. The primary objectives of the original brief given to HawkinsBrown were: For the new building to be the ‘heart' of the student experience: to provide added value to the student experience, to maximise student footfall and to produce higher levels of student satisfaction.

HawkinsBrown have designed a building that provides proactive support for new educational methods through a combination of traditional study areas, meeting points, relaxation spaces and numerous configurations of different learning styles. Bespoke furniture ‘nests' and ‘pods' were designed by HawkinsBrown to accommodate small groups of students to carry out group project work. Each pod contains power, data and lighting and is bookable on the universities Internet. Some are designed on a more traditional booth with tables to work at while others are more informal nests with Fat Boy beanbags. Individual work can be carried out in the "drive-by' computer terminals at the entrance to the Hub.

The interior design of the Hub references the rich cultural mix of students attending the University and recreates carpet and wallpaper designs at an extravagated scale, giving a contemporary twist on the traditional domestic interior. The Hub is an exemplar of passive, low energy design, and has achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent' rating.

"In terms of how well the building meets the brief, we are delighted with the building as it houses all our needs and more." - Prof Gerry Ackerman, University of Coventry.
