HOK create an inspiring place to work

HOK London's move to the Qube in Fitzrovia gave us the opportunity to design a space that would truly represent who we are, what we believe in and meet our needs as a design practice. We wanted to demonstrate we could design an inspirational, world-class sustainable design within the normal budgetary constraints for a commercial office fit-out, while providing a platform for creative design to take place. As a result, the HOK Office is the first LEED Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI) Gold certification in the UK, which is functional, stylish and uplifting.

The design team applied an integrated approach which embedded sustainable strategies into the design, achieving real results in both energy and efficient resource use and social behaviour. Most LEED credits were earned with a diligent use of sustainable materials with a particular emphasis on recycled content, rapidly renewable materials and the utilisation of materials and finishes that contribute to better indoor air quality. As part of the sustainability initiative HOK encourages staff to travel to work by bike, resulting in a 10% increase in bike usage in the London office over the last year.

The open-plan layout of the interior incorporates numerous breakout and conference areas allowing staff to work flexibly, and encourages collaborative working; an important part of the company culture. The atrium space is the hub of the office - a hive of activity that unveils the mechanics behind the scenes. The materials used in the space reflect the light and visitors are welcomed into a bright, colourful, airy space regardless of the weather on any given day. The overall design chpsen was a simple clean approach that would pass the test of time, and be adaptable to change if / when necessary.
