MARTTIINI SHOP, HELSINKI
Thursday 29 Sep 2011
The World’s finest Puukko shop
The "Puukko" is a traditional Finnish knife; a crafted object and an everyday tool. Marttiini has manufactured knives in Lapland, Northern Finland since 1928.
The new Marttiini shop is situated in the heart of Helsinki, with Senate Square and the Cathedral seen from the window. The new shop combines Marttiini’s long tradition and history with contemporary design. The materials used in the shop; wood, metal and leather, are the same materials used to construct the knives. All details have been designed with functionality in mind, allowing this small space to display more than 200 different products. The new Marttiini shop is just like the "Puukko": beautifully functional!
Technical solutions The challenge was to design a solution for displaying the large variety of products. To find the right product a customer should be able to take close look at each product. Product walls showcase each product which is attached to it's own slightly tilted block of wood with powerful magnets. The designers spent a good amount of time on finding a simple enough combination that works with all the 'puukkos' whether they are displayed with or without the sheaths. The use of magnets makes the setup also easily modifiable so the personnel can change the products on display whenever there is need.
The shop also needed storage close to the products for daily use. So a small storage space behind each product was made so the personnel can find the needed product easily. The functional details are strongly connected to the look and feel of a space and play an important role in improving the sales.
