ZEN DEPARTMENT STORE, SHENYANG
Friday 02 Sep 2011
"Zen is a voyage through a city of emotions, eccentric fashion expression, human desires and sexuality."
The Zen Department Store Brand is the inspiration of Central Retail Corporation, from Thailand. Zen targets the young, high energy, creative fashion market to differentiate from the well established Central Department Stores, now operating 13 stores in Thailand and China. The 1st Zen store opened in 1991 in Bangkok.
The 2nd and newest Zen department store is located in the new mixed use Joy City development in downtown Shenyang, China. Joy City is a mixed use development with over 280,000 m2 of dynamic retail in 4 different themed buildings. The new Zen department Store is located in the "modern family" complex with over 21,000 m2 on 5 levels from B1-L4.
The design philosophy for Zen is expressed in its exciting, young, edgy, and somewhat eccentric interior environments. Striving for a new sense of an "urban chic" the store plays with sleek industrial finishes fused with cool pop graphics, and an intriguing sense of surprise. It is true experiential retail, from the polished concrete surfaces, "sexcentric" lingerie zones and hip photo graphics, to the Romeo and Juliet washrooms. The Zen department store immerses Asia's young fashionista's into a global melting pot of bold, expressive fashion and lifestyle.
From the beginning the design team searched for ideas, imagery, and ways of reaching out, and touching peoples senses and emotions. Huge effort was placed on finding a "new visual design language" to directly touch the consumer.
The "attitude" of Zen was defined in a mosaic of words, emotions, senses, finishes, graphic imagery, and human desires. From this rich tapestry of human/emotional influences that the environmental designs emerged for each floor, and each department.
The store celebrated its soft opening in August, 2011.
