St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi
Wednesday 12 Jun 2013
The hotel is a themed mixed-use beach resort development. Combining five-star hotel accommodation, an art centre, Health & Raquet club, a retail centre and luxurious apartments and villas, it is built around an 18 hole designer golf course.
Inspired by the legacy of the Astor family from the New York's Gilded Age, the hotel combines a modern interpretation of the finest levels of service with the local heritage of Abu Dhabi. For the hotel, HBA took inspiration from their surroundings and created a contemporary Mediterranean interior design with Arabic influences. The style was enhanced by the use of local products and elements. The overall palette has a strong connection to the island and is light and airy with a number of natural and earthy materials, colours and shapes including sand roses and sea swells. A stone floor, reminiscent of sand, was used throughout the property and hand selected from local quarries. Lighter woods with a wide grain and a natural finish were selected to create a calming ambience that flows through the food and beverage outlets, the guestrooms and the public spaces.
The ceiling is a golden, recessed dome, typical of Italian architecture. Concentric circles of the custom designed crystal in the grand chandelier gracefully cascade into a form reminiscent of a delicately curving seashell. Natural sea shapes and colours are also found in the patterns of the rugs and in the art located on the tall lobby walls. The most distinguishable feature is the view you see upon entering the property. The entire back wall of the hotel's lobby is made of frameless glass overlooking the sea offering unobstructed views unlike any other in Abu Dhabi.
With Mediterranean influenced architecture and the surrounding natural environment, the resort's living spaces range from the intimate to the grand, from 55 sq m Superior Rooms and 85 sq m suites to a majestic 2000 sq m Royal Suite.
High recessed ceilings with a natural palette make the rooms feel large and expansive. Because natural elements predominate, every room is different. Mindful of the relaxed, resort atmosphere, the stone is honed rather than polished, and finishes are rustic rather than highly polished lacquered rooms. Each room is complimented with a slightly arched balcony, creating a contemporary Mediterranean feel.
The serene atmosphere of the Spa coupled with internationally acclaimed treatments makes it an ideal place for a total mind, body and spirit rejuvenation experience. Natural materials create a palette of pale gold, cream and darker tones of slates and marbles. Recesses of domes are finished in a silver leaf, recalling the gold leafed domes in the resort, while the luminous sky-like surface softly help illuminate the natural hues of the spa. For a more intimate experience, guests can receive treatments in one of three themed Spa Suites with private terraces and pools.
