a monthly round-up of the world's best interiors and design stories
EAST Hotel, Beijing, China
Monday 17 Dec 2012
The design brief for East hotel was to create a high-end contemporary business hotel, with all features demanded by the international business traveller for work and leisure without a clinical feel. The hotel had to still have a warm welcoming atmosphere Due to the location and the proximity of the adjacent park this became a key design element for the hotel.
The interior has echoed this link to nature, with heavy use of natural materials such as locally sourced, sustainable wood, bamboo and stone throughout. A minimal colour palate was adopted to enhance this theme and keep the interior spaces coherent. The local culture is very important to the destinations we create; each project we work on is specifically design for its own unique local region and characteristics, adding genuine personality to our designs. The inclusion of carefully curated local art in design engages the guests to the surrounding local area and culture from Jiangtai, the famous 798 and Caochangdi art zones nearby.
The reception area has been specifically designed with a unique sense of arrival, created with a design language that alludes to an art gallery. With clean lines, minimal furniture and space given to house the two remarkable art pieces by local contemporary artists. Another stunning feature for this area is the staircase, surrounded by metallic rods and illuminated to create a warm, dramatic highlight. Art commissioned for the guest rooms and public lobby areas show interpretations of the Chinese way of life, the playful illustrations add real personality and local context to the guest area. Bespoke photography, commissioned to illustrate hidden areas of Beijing, have been installed as a feature wall in the guest rooms. Guest bathrooms have high-end finishes with rain showers, oversized cubical complete with built in seating. In some executive suites a free standing bath has been placed adjacent to the picture window, offering a unique style to the ambience that is not generally in keeping with a business hotel.
The conference floor is specially created to be more interactive and flexible for business needs, with foldable screens to make the spaces totally interchangeable. Interactive F&B options such as the candy wall, pizza and noodle bar provide facilities that guests can enjoy, creating a more pleasant working environment. Through the clever use of space and careful planning, the spa and health club area has been optimised to accommodate a full range of leisure experiences including a state-of-the-art gym, an infinity pool, steam room, sauna and massage pool. Located on the top floor is the two level executive lounge, designed to take advantage of the panoramic view it uses rich colours and textures such as leather, wool and dark woods to give an exclusive ambience to this space.
A key design feature in the lounge area is the ‘wine wall’; this feature continues the interactive, relaxed environment of the hotel. Benoy worked closely with the client to ensure EAST hotel was created as an environmentally conscious design, delivering a design solution with minimal impact on the world around us. We are very proud that the hotel has been awarded the prestigious LEED Gold award for sustainable design.
