45 PARK LANE HOTEL, LONDON
Thursday 05 Apr 2012
Paul Davis + Partners have worked in collaboration with the Office of Thierry Despont, producing exciting and iconic results at this new Mayfair landmark.
Working closely with Schwinghammer Lighting Designers and Spanlite Lighting Consultants, the team have confronted the dilemmas of turning a typical 1960's building into a luxury international hotel for the 21st Century.
The proposed renovation has been designed to maximize the sustainability and energy efficiency of the building. The building has been further enhanced with feature lighting incorporated into the fin system and into the ground floor canopy. The artwork on the front elevation is also lit providing an element of drama to the characteristics of the external façade.
The brief required the lighting to be visible when viewed from Hyde Park opposite and to make a visual statement to traffic flowing down Park Lane. Just as importantly however, the LED battens were not to be directly viewable from any of the bedroom windows overlooking Hyde Park. Each of the horizontal linear arrays of batten lamps were to be independently addressable to enable animated washes up and down the building if required.
Combined with angled baffles, the battens were aligned to provide an even colourwash of orange illumination over the underside of the Brise Soleil louvres which clad the building. Shining the light through bespoke colour filters, the lighting simulates the look and feel of old fashion tungsten lighting and highlights the Art Deco features of the building.
Internally, bespoke light fittings have been designed for all public areas of the building with stunning lighting supplied by Netherlands based lighting design studio, Brand Van Egmond.
