a monthly round-up of the world's best interiors and design stories
The new collection by Devon-based designers Young & Norgate for 2013 includes the highly crafted Folk Dining Table, Wonder Cabinet, and Cooper Stool.
The Wonder Cabinet
A fresh take on the curio cabinet, the Wonder Cabinet uses traditional structural elements and combines them with a modern oak interior and contemporary colour finish, seen here in cool grey. Designed to showcase objects of interest, the cabinet is a nod towards traditional elegance but with a current twist.
Folk Dining Table
Handcrafted from oak, this dining table is the perfect setting for an intimate dinner with friends. The Folk dining table design incorporates a round table top with unobtrusive leg frame, to allow for seating at any angle. Although designed to seat 4 - 6 people, can be custom made to any size.
Animate Bedside Table
An ideal accompaniment to any bedroom suite, the Animate bedside is individual in character and eye-catching in appearance. Designed to showcase the drawer mechanics whilst allowing for a harmonious integration with the outer shell of the cabinet.
Kitchen/bar stool inspired by the cooper’s craft; the art of barrel making. The Cooper stool design incorporates an angle jointed seat base, allowing for increased comfort, as well as naturally splaying the legs of the stool to provide a sturdy footprint. We like to imagine a master cooper resting upon his namesake, a tumbler of cider in hand.
Animate Writing Desk
This striking desk combines thoughtful design and considered functionality, showing off the internal mechanics of the drawer system. The surface area allows for a combination of computer and stationery accessories with an optional stationery tray sunk into the drawer.
With a belief that simplicity is the key to elegance, this modern pared- back chair works perfectly as a dining or desk chair. A solid timber chair with a laminated back support which, has been hand-shaped to provide comfort.
Young & Norgate
Young and Norgate came together 3 years ago with a shared vision for quality and craftsmanship. Awarded a Design Guild Mark for their Animate Desk earlier last year they are beginning to carve a reputation for innovative furniture design and exceptional handmade quality. All their products are made in a converted cider press on the south coast of Devon, with the majority of their materials locally sourced. ‘There is something incredibly satisfying crafting furniture by hand using time honoured techniques, knowing that these pieces of work are hopefully going to be passed on’.
