It is now bordering on cliché to refer to China as the land of opportunity for foreigners. The city has a rich history of outsiders prospering within its walls; one need look no further that the abundance of wealthy pre-war European villas lining its many streets as evidence. The city has recently re-emerged as a global hub for international creative agencies plugged into an increasingly globalised world.
Enter Andrei Zerebecky and Lukasz Kos, who cofounded Four O Nine in 2011 in Shanghai. The duo arrived in Shanghai with a treehouse project built in Canada, which received recognition from the likes of Taschen, and Thames & Hudson among others. Upon arriving in Shanghai, the pair designed a storefront for a contemporary furniture showroom that Surface Asia nominated as one of Shanghai's top retail spaces of 2012.
In late 2013, Four O Nine launched their PLEAT Lounger Lux in Singapore as part of their PLEAT series of furniture. The PLEAT Lounger Lux, like its family members, features a dramatically cantilevered seat, pleated in the centre to cradle and support the spine and bottom in a relaxed and comfortable posture. This established a signature design approach that obsesses on the harmonious integration of form, structure and comfort. These high quality handcrafted loungers compose to form versatile and unmistakably distinctive additions to any contemporary interior or exterior space. The PLEAT Lounger is handcrafted in one of Shanghai's top boutique furniture workshops from brake-formed steel and is lined with padded leather.
