a monthly round-up of the world's best interiors and design stories
Ochre is a tightly-knit design company founded in 1996 by two British women, Joanna Bibby and Harriet Maxwell Macdonald who met at art school. With a shared aesthetic for the beauty of the understated they were inspired to put their ideas into practice for their debut at 100% Design in London. The first creations were exquisitely crafted gessoed lamp bases, delicately coloured, water gilded and perfectly balanced with simple shades.
Solenne de la Fouchardiere became the third partner of Ochre in October 2000, and the team continued to expand their horizons. Today Ochre is an international cult brand that continues to grow organically, while staying true to its considered and crafted design roots.
The influential collection consists of furniture, lighting and accessories for the interior, the emphasis being on the use of very high quality materials, flawless British craftsmanship and technical virtuosity. Designs are all underpinned by the mastery of unusual materials and individual crafts.
Ochre has moved their showroom to open a new space located in Clerkenwell, London's foremost creative district. The new showroom spans 1500sqft devoted to the growing Ochre collection - elegant modern lighting, furniture, accessories and bespoke.
The designs push the boundaries of what we hang from our ceilings and explore original shapes and unusual materials with intriguing textures. Tempered glass drop lights with bronze stems, twisted silk shades, coconut shell mirrors, buffalo horn handles, horsehair and nubuck upholstery.
Names are glamorous and evocative too - the Eternal Dream Sofa, Snooze Chair and Seed Cloud Light and the palette moody and muted - graphite, gazelle, old rose, snow, aqua, rust and grey. The showroom houses Ochre's stable of classics, one-off bespoke pieces and the already acclaimed new collection.
Cloud Shade - the combination of woven stainless steel mesh with a fine see through fabric creates a fluid sculptural shade that appears to float and shimmer. Hung together they appear like a cluster of summer clouds.
OCHRE is a British based furniture, lighting and accessory design company with a showroom open by appointment in London and a retail store in New York City.
