a monthly round-up of the world's best interiors and design stories
Anna James' debut collection Verona is a strong statement of intent.
Applying modern finishes and dazzling design to antique and classic furniture pieces, James takes an already beautiful object and imbues it with her vibrant, excited and bold artwork.
Anna is gaining a strong reputation for the individuality of her work, high levels of individual craftsmanship, painstaking attention to detail and humorous yet sophisticated designs.
Verona as a collection can be characterised as Anna's personal musings on love in its many shapes and forms. From the declarations of love in the graffiti work that is recreated on the centrepiece of the collection, the brilliantly original Verona wardrobe through to her own love of furniture design and the love which by necessity, she needs to give each individual piece throughout the creative process.
Verona and Romeo and Juliet have been inspired by Anna's visits to Juliet's house in Verona, Italy. She is totally captivated by the graffiti covering the walls at the archway entrance, all of it being declarations of Love by visiting lovers, of all ages, from all over the world. The colours, and the messages create completely unique images.
Anna devised a process to replicate the walls on furniture, by taking a series of digital images, which she then transposed onto her carefully prepared period pieces.
Because messages are constantly being added to the walls, Anna's design for her Verona furniture is unique to a particular moment in time, and gives each piece its own individual artwork
