a monthly round-up of the world's best interiors and design stories
SAYL is a family of work and side chairs that deliver all of the design, innovation, quality and performance you expect from Herman Miller - but at under £200 to the customer, SAYL makes great design attainable.
Designer Yves Béhar set out with a set of questions - is it possible to build a high-performance, lighter-weight, recyclable, low-cost task chair with fewer materials, more finish options and a standard 12 year, 24 hour Herman Miller warranty? Inspired by the Golden Gate Bridge, he wanted to explore whether the same principle used to suspend bridges over water could apply to a chair.
The unframed back of SAYL has no hard edges, allowing the user greater freedom to move. Ease of use is central to this design concept - leveraging a 30 year heritage of design research, ergonomic learning and materials innovation, the 3D technology of the suspension back offers the user intuitive controls and simplified functionality. The simple, elegant design of SAYL chairs allows them to slip in and out of any environment, complementing, rather than competing, with the style of the objects around it. The wide pallet of colours and finishes includes vibrant, expressive colours, alongside conservative and executive options.
SAYL only uses what is needed - the use of intelligent materials has enabled fewer components and reduced energy consumption in manufacturing. Our ‘ready to assemble' option comes in a smaller box, reducing the environmental impact of freight and shipping. In accordance with Herman Millers cradle to cradle protocol, SAYL is MBDC Silver certified. It is 93% recyclable. ‘We seek life unframed' is the embodiment of the philosophy and conceptual thinking behind this unique design.
Moving beyond conventional design protocols, it achieves a fine balance between ergonomics and aesthetics, preserving brand reputation yet responding to global market demands. A contemporary, fresh and innovative response to the demands of modern living, it pushes design boundaries within a commercially and sustainably viable framework.
