a monthly round-up of the world's best interiors and design stories
The Brooklyn-based multi-disciplinary design firm, Think Fabricate, created the Stepping Stones collection as a playful exploration between surface and form.
The original lineup - a chair and ottoman set, bench, and credenza - all feature functional cutouts emulating the forms of stepping stones with asymmetrical shapes and wood cladding offset with colorful accents. With ICFF on the horizon, the company is ‘stepping up' the collection with new materials and applications including: Stepping Out, an indoor-outdoor chair and ottoman; Stepping Up, an upholstered chair in Maharam fabric; and Stepping Wood Grain, a chair and ottoman in bamboo and walnut.
According to Think Fabricate co-founder Susan Doban, "We wanted to explore the use of wood as a fabric, using the grain and natural color to create texture." Jason Gorsline, of Think Fabricate, adds, "The outdoor chair was designed in response to popular demand. The shape and storage possibilities made it a natural fit for a poolside or backyard but also works well in a lobby or lounge."
The full Stepping Stones collection includes:
Stepping Stones Credenza
A two-sided credenza that is commanding enough to be the center of attention at a party yet holds its own as a functional room divider for daily use. The inset bamboo plywood doors and recycled marble surface evoke the appearance of rounded stepping stones and provide an engaging contrast to the smoothly lacquered structure.
Stepping Wood is the first chair and ottoman set designed for the Stepping Stones collection. The cladding combines painted and natural bamboo finishes to create the appearance and tactile appeal of fabric while the brightly colored sides create a striking, modern juxtaposition. It offers a playful way to incorporate storage into functional pieces.
Continuing Think Fabricate's love of wordplay, Stepping Out was designed with the outdoors in mind - in more ways than one. Using a new material palette, the designers chose Afromosia and Richlite to create a striking, sustainable and outdoor-friendly chair and ottoman set. The body of the chair features Afromosia boards of varying widths, creating a strong tactile appeal, while the black Richlite endcaps are engraved with an arcadian scene of ducks landing in a cattail marsh. Two coordinating ottomans complete the line - one with an angled footrest and the other with a flat top that can be used as a table or a shared footrest. Stepping Out can be specified with or without storage functions and and is also available in plastic wood.
If the original Stepping Stones chair was comfortable with boards of bamboo plywood, imagine what upholstery from "the king of fabrics" can do! The Stepping Up chair is expertly crafted from walnut and upholstered in environmentally friendly fabrics from Maharam including Layers Garden and Salon. Similar to the other chairs in the collection, it has matching ottomans and space for storage.
Stepping Wood Grain
Taking two of the company's favorite wood species, Think Fabricate coalesces bamboo and walnut into one delectably striped chair! The curved corner pieces are milled in solid walnut joined by bamboo plywood and walnut boards of assorted widths with endcaps made from lacquered MDF. The Stepping Wood Grain chair is also available with a range of corresponding ottomans.
Think Fabricate was co-founded by Susan Doban and Jason Gorsline in November 2009 as a multidisciplinary design studio affiliated with Doban Architecture. Think Fabricate's primary goal is to design solutions for better living, learning and community. All of the company's collections are designed and manufactured in Brooklyn, using sustainable materials, natural wood, applied color and historical motifs juxtaposed with modern forms.
