THE BIG BLOCK RUG
Balanced Design Wednesday 15 Dec 2010

THE BIG BLOCK RUG, designed by Balanced Design - a design studio in Providence, Rhode Island, USA - unites dramatic blocks of colour with textural shifts and irregular edges. Geometric and yet organic, the rug is inspired by the artistic principles of abstract painter Mark Rothko who in the 1950's organized endless fields of colour while exploring shifts in surface and shape. Made of sustainable 100% New Zealand wool - a biodegradable and renewable fiber - with a 100% cotton backing using a latex adhesive, the rug is manufactured locally in the USA. The cut and loop machine tufted rug offers beautiful height variations and can be customised to match any environment through colour and size. In addition to offering custom dyed yarns, the colour blocks of shape are themselves interchangeable allowing designers to work within the specifications of the room itself.

This rug is best used for residential or light commercial traffic. BIG BLOCK rug was designed and manufactured in May 2009. Founded in 2002, by graphic designer Melinda Cox, BALANCED DESIGN is a Rhode Island design company using eco-friendly materials like organic fabrics and wool for area rugs, hand printed fabrics and handmade pillows. Their designs are inspired by just about everything: modern artists, the shape of a bird's foot, the pod of a flower, the artwork of a child, and have been called 'happy' and 'whimsical' and are really about simplicity. The designs are created in the Providence studio, are hand printed in an old mill in Rhode Island, and manufactured in Fall River, Massachusetts. All of the line is made in the USA.
