Nightingale Associates victorious at Green Apple Awards

Health, education and science building specialists Nightingale Associates were awarded National Gold and National Silver awards at the Green Apple Awards 2010 on Tuesday. The Gold award (in the medium-sized business architects category) was presented for the Gateway Sixth Form College project – a highly-sustainable new-build college campus in Leicester. Working with structural engineers Arup, Nightingale Associates designed a building that minimises carbon footprint using affordable and innovative environmental solutions. Many of these solutions were kept on display rather than being hidden in the build as is custom, in order to encourage students at the college to take a proactive approach to environmental issues.

The Silver award winner (for Wales) was Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda – a replacement healthcare facility which provides an exemplary centre for the community whilst celebrating the reconciliation of contemporary aesthetics with a contextual response to the site’s architectural heritage. A major sustainable factor in this project is the incorporation of a biomass boiler, which is currently the ‘largest to be installed in a new-build NHS scheme in the UK’.
