New York architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro are leading the race to design the Broad Museum in Los Angeles, according to media reports.
Confidential sources told Christopher Hawthorne, the architecture critic at the Los Angeles Times, that billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad is favoring the firm after hearing presentations by six short listed firms. While Broad has been keeping the media guessing as to who will land the high-profile commission another aspect of the project, the selection of a site, is also yet to be determined.
Broad reportedly favors building the museum in downtown Los Angeles, but has said that if he doesn’t get a good deal from the city to lease the site, for example for $1 year for 99 years, he may choose to build the facility in Santa Monica. Officials at the Broad Foundation will only say that a decision is expected soon.
