SFMOMA announces shortlist for expansion

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) today announced a short list of four firms to lead a major expansion project that will triple the size of the museum’s galleries and public spaces. Those firms are: Adjaye Associates, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Foster and Partners, and Snøhetta.

The expansion will encompass additional gallery space and interior enhancements in the museum's Third Street building, designed by architect Mario Botta, and an extension with presence on Howard Street, to the south, that will connect to the back of the existing museum along the southern facade. The museum will also develop a neighboring site currently occupied by a fire station.

During the next few months the museum’s selection committee, which includes museum and community leaders, will make studio visits and visit relevant buildings by the finalists. A selection of an architect is expected in September. The museum hopes to unveil design concepts in 2011 with completion of the expansion slated for 2016.
