Foster + Partners named master planners for Imperial War Museum'

Imperial War Museum London has appointed Foster + Partners as architect and Drivers Jonas Deloitte as project manager to develop a master plan for the Lambeth Road site.

The museum would like to improve the experience for visitors to site, formerly the Bethlem Royal Hospital (Bedlam). The first phase will be delivered in time for national commemoration of the First World War centenary in 2014.

Foster + Partners and Drivers Jonas Deloitte will work with the museum to develop a comprehensive master plan within the footprint of the existing building. One aims is to enhance the internal space to provide new galleries and visitor services facilities. As well as creating a coherent visitor route, the master plan intends to maximise revenue generation opportunities and provide a more efficient and sustainable infrastructure for the museum and its collections.

The long-term project will take a phased implementation approach, to commence once Foster + Partners’ spatial master plan has been approved by the Museum in September 2010.
