Exhibition on housing for the poor to open in São Paulo

A new exhibition will open 7 April in Paraisópolis, in São Paulo, Brazil demonstrating new ways to improve neighborhoods in one of the nation’s poorest areas.

‘A Cidade Informal do Séc. XX,’ or the informal city in the 21st century , which will run until 12 May at São Paulo’s Museu da Casa Brasileira (MCB), is the result of two years of work by teams from the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) and São Paulo’s Municipal Housing Secretariat (SEHAB) to develop projects aimed at integrating this poor area or favela of about 77,000 residents into the surrounding urban fabric. These projects will be implemented by the city over the coming year.

The exhibition also features an interactive show curated by the Brazilian architect Marisa Barda in which projects produced by both Brazilian and foreign architects are shown by focusing on four themes that best represent the problems of the favelas: connections, transitions, fruition and transformations.

Other architects involved in the project include Rainer Hehl and Jörg Stollmann, as well as six design offices: Urban Think Tank (Venezuela), Elemental (Chile), Christian Kerez (Switzerland), Ciro Pirondi, Marcos Boldarini, and MMBB (Brazil).

Work by students from Havarfd’s Graduate School of Design Columbia University, and the Escola da Cidade in São Paulo are also included.

This spring, a new site will be chosen in São Paulo for a new round of projects and international teams will present the designs at the fifth IABR in 2012 as well as in São Paulo.
