Race Cottam Associates submit plans for advanced green energy facility

Plans have been submitted for a groundbreaking energy from waste plant in London, designed by Yorkshire architects Race Cottam Associates. The advanced gasification facility at Dagenham Dock forms part of the London Sustainable Industries Park.

Sheffield-based team Race Cottam were appointed by Resource Park developer Cyclamax to design the plant, which will use advanced conversion technology on commercial and non-recyclable waste from businesses in the area. Heat and power is produced by the gasification process to take residual waste materials from local businesses and convert them to a gas – called a syngas – that can be used in the same way as natural gas.

Race Cottam has worked with London Thames Gateway Development Corporation and the Mayor of London’s office to deliver the designs and architectural advice for the project. Regional Director David Speddings said: “The facility will provide heat and power from East London’s commercial waste – diverting it from landfill sites – and will allow other tenants on the Park to use renewable and low carbon heat and power for their offices, workshops and factories.”

If planning permission is granted, it is hoped construction of the flagship facility on a 3.5ha Brownfield site will be completed by the end of 2012. Race Cottam, which has been working closely with Stratus Environmental on the project, has a growing portfolio of major waste and energy schemes across the UK. These include the provision of architectural design services for the £250m Belvedere scheme to deliver what is set to be the largest waste treatment facility ever built in Britain.
