HLM team with Arup on prison design

Architects HLM and their multidiscipline design partners, ARUP and EC Harris, have been appointed by the Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS) as the Exemplar Design Team to design and administer the construction contract for the 800-bed Magilligan Prison which is to be built on the existing prison site.

HLM and their team will provide comprehensive integrated design services over pre-construction stage during the coming 30 months and will then become the Technical Design Advisor and Contract Administrator for the Prison Service during the construction of the new prison, which will be undertaken on a sequenced basis.

The company will shortly begin direct engagement with staff and stakeholders at Magilligan and will assist the Prison Service in developing the business case for the new multi million pound prison. HLM place sustainability at the core of what they do with the objective of creating solutions which shape experiences and enhance the quality of daily life and with their team they will develop innovative state of the art sustainable designs for all stages of the project.

Commenting on the appointment Prison Service Director Robin Masefield said; “The HLM team were selected for their design strength and familiarity and experience of major prison developments, both nationally and internationally, and to bring forward the benefits of innovation and sustainable solutions to allow optimum operational benefit and flexibility for the new prison. Their concept designs, already submitted as part of their tender bid, will now be developed, refined and tested against our requirements and I and the staff at Magilligan prison look forward to working closely with them in progressing this exciting project.”
