Van Alen Fellowships announced

The Van Alen Institute has announced the recipients of the 2009–2010 New York Prize Fellowships. The New York Prize Fellowships were established in 2007 to bring practitioners and scholars to Van Alen’s headquarters in New York to pursue advanced research related to the design and conception of public space. Now in its third year, the Fellowship has supported over 30 architects, designers, and related practitioners from all over the world.

The winners for 2009 are:

common room (Lars Fischer, Maria Ibañez, Todd Rouhe), New York, and Telic Arts Exchange (Sean Dockray), Los Angeles
Project title: The Public School (for Architecture)

Erik Carver and Janette Kim, New York City
Project title: Underdome

Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo, Seattle
Project title: Looking at Nothing

The New York Prize Fellows were selected through a competitive open application process. They will be in residence at Van Alen Institute for a period of three months each from fall 2009 through summer 2010. In addition to carrying out their independent projects, they will take part in a range of public programs related to their work.

"This year’s Fellowship projects focus on three areas of inquiry to which Van Alen Institute has had a long-standing commitment: architectural education, energy policy in relation to the built environment, and techniques of urban representation," stated jury member and acting Van Alen Co-director Joan Ockman. “The projects address these issues in particularly challenging and innovative ways. We are very excited about the new thinking and synergy they will bring to Van Alen in the coming year."
