Heritage Lottery Fund confirms £4.42m grant to fund restoration of Pitzhanger Manor House

Work will commence to restore the ‘dream home’ of British architect Sir John Soane (once architect to the Bank of England) following a £4.42m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

Coupled with a further £275,000 development grant from the HLF and £4.14m funding from Ealing Council, Pitzhanger Manor House in west London will close to the public in January 2015, opening again once the restoration is complete in 2018.

Sir John Soane drastically remodelled Pitzhanger Manor House in Ealing at the beginning of the 19th century as a country home. At this point in time, only portions of the property are open to the public but a thorough restoration by Jestico + Whiles, Julian Harrap Architects LLP and J&L Gibbons promises to provide full access for all visitors.

The scheme includes upgrading the 1939 art gallery extension, restoring the entire property and creating a new café for the public as well as revealing the north side of the building and the west elevation of Soane’s Eating Room, currently hidden under later additions. A wider redevelopment of the grounds is already underway with completion estimated for summer 2014.
