Ukraina Hotel entryway (Moscow) shortlist unveiled

Three finalists have been announced in an international open competition of architectural concepts for the Ukraina Hotel entryway. They are: ABD architects (Russia) in cooperation with Werner Sobek Moskwa (Russia); Studio 44 (Russia); and TPO Lesosplav (Russia) in cooperation with Malishev Wilson Engineers (Great Britain).

The Ukraina Hotel is one of the seven ‘Stalin Skyscrapers’ and a recognisable symbol of Moscow. Built in the 1950s, the hotel building is protected by the government as a heritage structure. This 36-storey building is 206m in height, including its 73 meter spire; the central section of the building contains the hotel and the ‘wings’ contain apartments.

The competition stated that the new elements of the entryway must be suitable to the significance of the building in historical, cultural and urban-planning terms while being a new symbol of the hotel that is in dialogue with the modern-day context of the city.

Sergey Kuznetsov, Chief Architect of the City of Moscow said: “It should be noted that the task was harder than we thought it would be. Even experienced participants did not appear as front-runners of the competition. In addition to career merits, luck also plays a major role here. Many members of the jury noted that the choice was difficult to make.

“There was a wide variety of quality projects, but not all of the participants managed to address all the tasks set in the competition brief. I believe that today’s decision is a major step forward for the development of the building and the hotel on a city level and I hope that one of the solutions of the finalists will be implemented.”
