Go-ahead given for The Institution of Structural Engineers new headquarters

The new London home of The Institution of Structural Engineers has been granted planning consent by the Borough of Islington, giving the official green light to Hugh Broughton Architects’ scheme for 47-58 Bastwick Street in Clerkenwell. The 1,600 sq m refurbishment project will take place in a 4-storey steel frame building.

A double-height reception will be created with a bridge at mezzanine level, display space for future exhibitions and a cantilever stair, all visible from the street through a glazed façade. Either side of the atrium will be public spaces including a 104-seat auditorium and meeting rooms equipped for video conferencing and webcasting.

Martin Powell, Chief Executive of The Institution of Structural Engineers said: “Leaving a home that has served the Institution so well for approaching 80 years is a hugely exciting prospect. Finding a building on which we could make our mark, an altogether different challenge. Bastwick Street offers us a great opportunity to showcase structural engineering as we seek to create the necessary space that combines the need for both public access and staff accommodation.”
