LEED Silver for ITAIPAVA ARENA FONTE NOVA

The SCHULITZ and TETRA-designed ITAIPAVA ARENA FONTE NOVA in Salvador has received a LEED Silver certification for its environmentally-friendly design elements. Opened in April 2013, the stadium is arranged in a horseshoe shape with a void facing towards an inner city lake. This opening in the southern stand provides optimum air flow into the stadium and provides space for a stage when the venue is not being used for sporting events.

The façade design was instrumental in achieving LEED Certification in silver: horizontal shading elements with varying inclinations depending on the façade's orientation provide sun protection whilst maximising daylight use. Furthermore, the use of rainwater reduces water consumption, the former stadium’s concrete was recycled and used as building material, the stadium’s energy consumption was minimised, the construction process was organised in a sustainable manner and the material’s primary energy consumption was considered in the design process.
