Green light given to £7m school expansion in East London by Architecture Initiative

Planning permission has been granted for an expansion of Olga Primary School in Bow, East London. Developed by Architecture Initiative through the Tower Hamlets Schools Limited PFI consortium with the Local Authority, the 3,500 sq m scheme will provide 720 student places and an estimated 100 new jobs for the local area.

At the moment, Olga Primary School currently operates with one access point and a single storey building. The £7m expansion project will see the school transformed into a three-storey building with three entry points and the ability to accommodate shared and out-of-hours programmes, sports and recreation activities.

Classrooms will be arranged with the youngest pupils on the ground floor and the eldest at the top; all classrooms will have direct access to outside space be it an external teaching area or a play deck. Architecture Initiative will incorporate a glazed entrance spine to provide clear circulation routes and generous gathering spaces for the children.
