Ten shortlisted to re-envision Mies-designed MLK Library in Washington DC

The District of Columbia Public Library has selected ten architects to move forward in the multi-stage process to choose a design for the renovation of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. The 41-year-old facility, which serves as the district’s central library was originally designed by Mies van der Rohe.

Twenty-six architect responded to the city’s request for qualifications in late September from which ten are invited to submit a ‘technical proposal’ for the building’s renovation. The proposals, due by 18 November, will be judged on the design approach and the project staffing rather than an actual design concept.

The shortlisted firms are: Cunningham Quill Architects/1100 Architects; Ennead Architects/Marshall Moya Architects; Leo A. Daly/Richard Bauer; Martinez and Johnson Architects/Mecanoo Architects; OMA/Quinn Evans Architects; Patkau Architects/Ayers Saint Gross; REX/Davis Carter Scott Architects; Shalom Baranes/Davis Brody Bond; Skidmore Owings & Merrill: and Studios Architecture/The Freelon Group.
