Redeveloped Richardson Olmsted Complex to include Buffalo Architecture Center

Flynn Battaglia Architects and Deborah Berke Partners have headed a ‘rehabilitation’ project at the Richardson Olmsted Complex in Buffalo, U.S., a National Historic Landmark designed by H. H. Richardson. Originally used as a state hospital building, the redesigned property is due to be used as a hotel and conference centre following two years of redevelopment works due to start in 2014.

A new north-side entranceway is in the plan with Deborah Burke Partners’ design displaying an illuminated glass volume juxtaposed against the existing Medina sandstone building. The first phase of the project will see the main Towers Administration Building transformed to include a café, Buffalo Architecture Center, hotel lobby, and event and conference facilities. Two adjacent buildings will host the 88 hotel units.

"The Richardson Olmsted Complex is a perfect example of the successful public private partnerships that are paving the way for the revitalisation of the Western New York economy," commented Governor Andrew M. Cuomo. "In addition to being one of the many architectural jewels that attract tourists to Buffalo, this project will create hundreds of construction jobs as well as permanent employment opportunities in the region."
