Ennead Architects, Lateral Office, Seeding Office and White Arkitekter shortlisted for FAR ROC competition

Four practices have been shortlisted in an international design competition to develop an 80+ acre site called Arverne East into a mixed-use, mixed-income, sustainable and storm-resilient community following the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy. The four teams were selected from 117 submissions from over 20 countries by the For a Resilient Rockaway (FAR ROC) jury. The Arverne East site is located in the Far Rockaways, Queens, New York.

The shortlisted firms are:

Ennead Architects (New York)
Lateral Office (Toronto)
Seeding Office (London)
White Arkitekter (Goteborg)

Each of the teams submitted a proposed site plan, specific resilient development strategies, smart infrastructure strategies, and proposed uses for facilities on the site. The competition brief stated that the entrants pose innovative building solutions that respond to New York City’s housing needs while addressing critical economic development to the Rocaways for long-term planning.

The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development Commissioner Mathew M. Wambua said: “The FAR ROC competition tapped into the international community of architecture and design practitioners, which responded with nearly 200 creative and imaginative waterfront development strategies for Arverne East. This is a great starting point and I look forward to the next iteration of the finalists’ concepts. These ideas have the potential to not only guide development and protect property, but most important of all, they could save lives.”
