Three shortlisted for Vancouver Arts Campus

The Emily Carr University of Art and Design (ECUAD) has shortlisted three design teams for a new $134m campus in Vancouver. In the running for the 26,600 sq m facility are Toronto-based Diamond + Schmitt Architects, Bing Thom Architects of Vancouver and the Toronto-based Zeidler Partnership.

The school, now located at Emily Carr’s Granville Island campus, has outgrown its current quarters precipitating the need for a new facility this time at EC’s Great Northern Way Campus. The three firms were selected from an initial field of eight national and international teams.

An RFQ will be issued to the shortlisted teams in September with a winning design to be selected in 2014. It is anticipated the project will complete in 2016. The bulk of the funding for the project - up to $113m - will be provided by the provincial government. Local philanthropist and art collector Michael Audain has pledged an additional $5m with the remaining funds to be raised by a capital campaign to be launched next spring.
