Taichung City Cultural Center shortlist announced

A shortlist of five firms or partnerships competing to design the new Taichung City Cultural Center has been released. The five top designs will now be reviewed and a winner announced in late August. The brief sought a cultural centre which distinguishes Taichung from the cities of Taipei and Kaohsiung and bolsters the vision of ‘culture’ as a defining element of the Taichung community.

Taichung City Cultural Center will incorporate a public library and fine arts museum as part of the Gateway City cultural park, ‘satisfying the cultural, artistic and recreational needs of Taichung’s residents’. The overall design objectives in the brief included: Local Identity; Cultural Landmark; Ecological Benchmark; Flexible Space; and a Social and Recreational Learning Environment.

The shortlist reads as such:

Stucheli Architekten AG / Mathis Tinner (Switzerland)
MASS STUDIES / Minsuk Cho (Korea)
Eisenman Architects, PC / Peter Eisenman (U.S.A.)
Jean-loup Baldacci ( France)
SANAA / Kazuyo Sejima (Japan)
