Elizabeth Fain LaBombard wins Rome Prize Fellowship 12 years after her father, William Fain, wins the same

The 2013/14 Rome Prize Fellowship, an annual prize given by the American Academy in Rome, has been awarded to Elizabeth Fain LaBombard, 12 years after her father, Willian H. Fain, Jr., FAIA, won the same prize. Both father and daughter were awarded for their landscape projects in the design category and as far as the Academy can determine, this is the first instance of a father and daughter both receiving the fellowship.

William Fain won in 2001 with his Water and Space, Returning the Tiber to Rome project which compared the River Tiber in Rome to the Los Angeles River. 12 years later and his daughter has just received the prize with her Living on the Edge: Rethinking Landscape on the Periphery of Rome work, addressing the fringe areas of the city and their lack of recreational space and infrastructure.

Elizabeth Fain LaBombard is an Associate at landscape architecture practice James Corner Field Operations, one of the key drivers behind the Highline scheme in New York which has received international praise. She will move with her husband and two sons to Rome for the 11-month fellowship. Her proud father said: “The fellowship was such a rich intellectual and creative experience, really life changing for me. I am so proud that Elizabeth was chosen.”
